This Thursday, May 27, Chancellor Claude Joseph and his Dominican counterpart Robeno Alvarez will open a meeting between the two Technical Secretariats of the Haitian-Dominican Joint Commission.
This meeting will make it possible to exchange information on the uses of the waters of the Massacre River and the projects currently underway in its watershed located in the northern zone of the Haitian-Dominican land border. It aims for a way out of the impasse and a happy outcome to the misunderstandings built around the project of construction, by the Haitian Government, of an irrigation canal fed by the Massacre River.
The Haitian Chancellery is very concerned about some bad interpretations of this file in the Dominican media and attempts to violate Haitian territory, in particular by Dominican nationals who are hostile to the project. It also recognizes the right of the two States to assert and defend their respective interests, particularly with regard to the reasonable and equitable use of shared resources.
The interests of the two nations must prevail, without either of the two being affected in their objectives and find a solution which must meet the standards of mutual respect, international law and the agreements signed between the two countries.
Claude Joseph continues to favor existing binational dialogue mechanisms working for the preservation of achievements and the implementation of policies and actions favorable to the harmonization of Haitian-Dominican relations.
