Haiti – FLASH : Storm Elsa becomes a Cat 1 Hurricane
As expected since yesterday, Elsa has strengthened as she heads south of Barbados, average winds of 120 km/h have been measured and gusts of 140 km/h have been recorded. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami reports that Tropical Storm Elsa has been classified as a Category 1 hurricane.
Hurricane force winds extend outward from the center up to 25 miles (35 km) and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km). Little change in strength expected over the next 48 hours.
At 8:30 a.m., the center of Hurricane Elsa was located near Latitude 13.1 North and Longitude 60.1 West. Elsa is moving west-northwest at nearly 28 mph (44 km/h), and this movement is expected to continue over the next two days. It will travel along the southern coast of Hispaniola on Saturday.
