Haiti - Justice : At least 52 foreigners are languishing in Haitian prisons

A certain number of foreigners are incarcerated in Haiti “Even if the list is not exhaustive, we can count at least 52 foreign nationals from : Colombia (including members of the commando who assassinated President Jovenel Moïse), Jamaica , from the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Uruguay, Bolivia, the United States and Nigeria among others… most of whom are detained on drug or murder charges […],” declared Inspector General Pierre René François, emphasizing that most do not know if they will one day be judged…

He said the 52 foreigners are being held in several penitentiaries in Haiti, where at least 142 other prisoners have died in 2022, most from malnutrition, cholera, tuberculosis or other infectious diseases.

Prison officials said relatives of several foreign detainees contacted them through their respective embassies or consulates to learn more about their conditions of detention.
