iciHaiti - FLASH : Severe weather across the country, update on the situation

Engineer Joseph Almathe Pierre Louis, Minister of Public Works (MTPTC), in coordination with the Minister of Public Health, the Director of Civil Protection, the Chief of Staff of the Ministry for the Status of Women, and the coordinator of Haiti’s Hydro-Meteorological Unit (UHM), held a press conference to provide an update on the meteorological situation and the impact of the severe weather currently affecting the country.

The authorities wish to clarify a crucial point for the public : according to the UHM, this is not a hurricane, but rather intense thunderstorm and rainfall activity that has caused significant damage in several departments. For its part, the Ministry of Public Works remains mobilized across the entire country to ensure the safety of citizens and the restoration of traffic flow.

Current situation in several departments :

Minister Pierre Louis provided an overview of the situation in various departments. While no major emergencies have been reported in most regions, certain areas are facing significant difficulties—notably the Greater South region, Grand’Anse and the Northwest.

In the West Department, heavy rainfall has caused runoff carrying sediment and debris in the Tijo and Tabarre areas.

In Petit-Goâve and Léogâne, the Ladigue and Caïman rivers are flowing normally, thanks to preventive measures taken beforehand. At the Vincent Bridge, which spans the Rouyonne River, there are no major alerts to report. However, near Delann, the river has diverted from its course; interventions are currently being organized to address this issue. In the South, near Les Cayes, specifically at the Antoine Simon and Brefèt ravines, sections of the riverbanks have collapsed, damaging roadways.

At La Créole, floodwaters have deposited a large quantity of debris.

In Tiburon, the road is cut off in the Tapion area; however, major repair operations are not yet possible, as water continues to surge forcefully through the ravines. Departmental teams remain on standby to intervene as soon as conditions allow.

Meanwhile, in the Grand’Anse department, a significant landslide occurred on National Road No. 7 in the Katisch area. Thanks to the rapid response of teams from the Ministry of Public Works, the road has been cleared. Work is also planned at Chadonnet to remove the earth and rocks currently obstructing the road.

In the Northwest department, the situation on National Road No. 5 requires special attention : the “Twa Rivyè” (Three Rivers) has washed away a portion of the roadway near Rozye and Degason.

In the Southeast department, although water levels in rivers and streams have risen, no major damage has been reported so far. Minister Pierre Louis took the opportunity to urge local authorities to carry out riverbed recalibration work at Basen Kayiman to reduce the risk of future flooding. Such work cannot be successfully completed without the cooperation of local authorities and the public.

Furthermore, he urges the population to exercise extreme caution, particularly in areas where rivers frequently overflow or where roads have sustained damage. MTPTC teams are continuing their work in the field, prioritizing urgent interventions and safety conditions in order to restore traffic flow wherever necessary.
